Hurricane Ivan - Appraisal Assignment

Hurricane Ivan - Appraisal Assignment

On September 16, 2004, Hurricane Ivan struck the Florida panhandle causing massive flood and wind damage. Our client's home was totally destroyed and the debris was washed away. The insured recovered flood policy limits from the National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP), but their losses far exceeded the flood limits. The outstanding issue was how much wind damage occurred before the flood waters impacted the property. Acting as the client's appraiser, we took a whole loss and damage approach, then deducted the flood payments and applied a percentage amount for likely wind damage that would have occurred before the flood, which was based on expert reports. As a result of this detailed analysis of wind and flood and our arguments, this appraisal process resulted in an award of an additional quarter million dollars to our client from the wind carrier.
