Florida public adjuster stresses voter diligence, research for November elections

With mid-term elections just weeks away, the licensed and certified public adjusters at Tutwiler and Associates say voters need to do their homework before voting for representatives that could very well change the future of property insurance in Florida.

When voters throughout the Sunshine state head to elect their next representatives in the state legislature, they will hold the future of their own property insurance policies in their hands, says Florida-based public adjuster Tutwiler and Associates. And before the voting public exercises its right as citizens to cast a vote for whomever they feel will best represent their interests, it must first learn all it can about the candidates’ views and policies on property insurance in order to make the most informed decision possible.

The licensed and certified public adjusters at Tutwiler and Associates, with offices throughout Florida and licenses in nine other states as well as the U.S. Virgin Islands, say these are unprecedented times for the state of Florida’s property insurance situation and as such, believe upcoming November elections will require an extraordinary amount of research and preparation on the part of voters. When the legislature convenes in early 2011, the Florida-based public adjuster believes several key decisions will be made that will affect the passage of legislation that will impact nearly all Florida policyholders; many of which will not be to the benefit of the public.

"Prices continue to rise, coverage continues to be reduced or, in cases like sinkhole coverage or certain cases of water damage, even eliminated altogether,” says Dick Tutwiler, founder and CEO of Tutwiler and Associates. “While new insurance capital is reported to be coming into the state, much of it is from Excess Surplus companies, which may mean substantially less protection for those insured by these companies than ‘admitted carriers.’ Even though it looks like hurricane season has largely spared Floridians in 2010, the insurance issues are still on the table, which is why these elections are so important.”

Tutwiler ticks off major property insurance issues that will be discussed in the state legislature like pricing, coverage, and market availability of insurance, in a way that belies his decades of experience as a public adjuster. With 37 years in the industry in the state of Florida, he’s seen state elections be called “game changers,” but he says with so many issues in play when the legislature reconvenes next year, the 2010 election stands to have a major effect on Florida policyholders. Surprisingly, none of the candidates are talking about the insurance issue in the run up to the election. His directive to Floridians is simple.

“My message to voters would be to pay attention to not only the insurance issues, but also to the candidates,” says Tutwiler. “See what their philosophy and vision are regarding legislation that could be helpful or harmful to you. Look at their records and then make decisions on the candidates, not the negative ads.”

These ads are certainly everywhere this fall, but Tutwiler says voters can only learn so much from paid advertising. The Florida-based public adjusters say while most of the general voting public may normally cast their votes down party lines, this November’s elections present a refreshing change to politics as usual.

"Republican, Democrat or Independent, it doesn’t matter because this is truly a non-partisan issue,” says Tutwiler. "Anyone who has a connection to a property insurance policy will be affected by the legislation that is likely to occur. We’re just encouraging voters to contact their state representatives early about whatever thoughts, questions or concerns they might have.”
